The Basics
What is IUPUI?
IUPUI was created in 1969 as a partnership by and between Indiana and Purdue Universities, with IU as the managing partner.
It is home to 22 schools and academic units and is the third largest campus in the state of Indiana.
IUPUI's Mission
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), a partnership between Indiana and Purdue Universities, is Indiana's
urban research and academic health sciences campus. IUPUI's mission is to advance the State of Indiana and the intellectual
growth of its citizens to the highest levels nationally and internationally through research and creative activity, teaching
and learning, and civic engagement. By offering a distinctive range of bachelor's, master's, professional, and Ph.D. degrees,
IUPUI promotes the educational, cultural, and economic development of central Indiana and beyond through innovative
collaborations, external partnerships, and a strong commitment to diversity.
IUPUI's Vision:
To be one of the best urban universities, recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for its achievements.
How is IUPUI different from other IU campuses?
In January 2005, a report identifying the different missions of the Indiana University campuses was released. In it, IUPUI
was characterized as a distinctly urban campus with a responsibility to serve greater Indianapolis through a broad array of
academic programs and community outreach.
