IU Visual Identity : IU Integrated Image

Integrated Image Roundtable Update - January 18, 2008

Next Steps for Centers, Institutes, Auxiliaries, and Affiliates

Dear Colleagues:

Through a June 2006 decision by the Board of Trustees, every academic and administrative department is required to use an IU signature on materials, ranging from publications and billboards to Web sites. IU auxiliary, center, institute, and other affiliated organizations have been exempt from most of the visual identity guidelines established so far. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be unveiling comprehensive guidelines specifically for these units.

On behalf of the Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations, our office invited 300 directors of official centers, institutes, and auxiliaries to complete an online survey in September/October. The survey addressed the audiences their unit serves, how their unit is funded, and their unit's relationship to the university. Over 120 directors responded to the survey, and about a dozen also participated in follow-up interviews in November to work out any kinks in anticipated guidelines. Findings from these efforts are helping to shape the new visual identity guidelines.

You may have interaction with these units or may want to offer your own complementary guidelines to IU’s global image guidelines. Here’s what you can expect in the coming month:

  • Since Jan. 1, these units no longer are able to order letterhead and business cards in the old templates. They should continue to use old stationery until they run out.
  • After Jan. 25, they (and you) will be able to download the new Integrated Image Guidelines manual in the “quick links” section at http://www.visualidentity.iu.edu.
  • After Feb. 1, they will be able to download new templates from the site and order new stationery from Printing Services in Bloomington or IKON in Indianapolis.

If representatives of these units would like to learn more about the new guidelines, they can attend a free workshop through University Human Resource Services. The workshops require prior registration and will be offered on Feb. 12 and May 1 in Bloomington.

If you have questions, please call (812) 855-0059 or e-mail image@indiana.edu.
