Each year, the Office of Communications and Marketing develops a strategic marketing plan to enhance IUPUI's reputation over the next fiscal year. The plans are built to take the campus' reputation and image in whatever direction has been chosen.

For example, one of our ongoing goals is to enhance IUPUI's image. The campus has been building a strong reputation for quality among its faculty, so that is a point our marketing plans reinforce. Likewise, the educational and research opportunities that are available for our high-achieving undergraduate students are a strong point among prospective students, so our plans make a point of underlining those possibilities. Those points - and other IUPUI strong points - form the basis of our marketing choices, whether in advertisements, image campaigns, web presentation or campus publications.

Our marketing plans are always geared to build awareness of IUPUI's mission, and to strengthen the public perception of IUPUI as a campus with a growing enrollment, a well-prepared and diverse student body, and a pride of place in IUPUI. Our marketing plans must always remind our various audiences that IUPUI is a dynamic community partner for Indianapolis and for the state, and also is a path to exciting career options for our students.

IUPUI's marketing plans must communicate with many audiences: policymakers and legislators; social, cultural and business leaders; teachers; those in the justice system; leaders in philanthropic circles; alumni; parents of prospective students; and - most of all - prospective students themselves.

It is vital that our plans encompass all that IUPUI has to offer. Our campus has a rich academic heritage, built on the foundation of world-class professional schools that have shaped Indiana's history. We have become one of America's leading urban universities because of the partnerships we have forged with companies, organizations and governments, all to build a better life for the community. And our research community is an integral part of some of the most intriguing, dramatic and world-shaping projects in the 21st century, including genomics, the study of the building blocks of life.

But IUPUI is more than those things, vital as they are. Our campus is growing, thanks to the contributions of our student-athletes in our intercollegiate athletics programs, our emerging student groups, a growing number of Greek organizations, as well as the role our schools are playing in the Indianapolis arts community. Our marketing plans are shining the spotlight on those elements of campus life so important to current and future students.

While most of IUPUI's marketing plans look outward, toward external audiences, they must also recognize the importance of our internal audiences, as well. Those in the IUPUI family are our voices in the community, and often our eyes on changes in our society. Our marketing efforts attempt to keep them up-to-date with the IUPUI story, to build a "pride in the campus" that will resonate with their friends and neighbors.
