The Campus Pride, Spirit, and Traditions website, nicknamed the Spirit Site, was launched in March 2006 to help increase and promote campus spirit and loyalty.
The site is a collaborative effort, managed by the Office of Communications and Marketing but involving contributions from University Archives, the IUPUI Senior Academy, faculty, staff, students, alumni and any other organization or group that is part of the IUPUI family. The site showcases IUPUI's burgeoning campus pride, spirit, and traditions, and builds loyalty to the university, enhancing our recruitment and retention efforts for future students, faculty, and staff.
These three categories were selected because they best represent the various components of life on any major college or university campus.
- PRIDE: This section includes such topics as campus history, notable alumni, and IUPUI factoids.
- SPIRIT: This section highlights various campus spirit events, groups like the IUPUI Pep Band, cheerleaders, and dance team. You can also find information about Jaguars Athletics, game day promotions, and giveaways in the spirit section.
- TRADITIONS: This section includes subjects such as Jag Jargon, myths and legends about IUPUI, campus hangouts (both past and present), and more.
The IUPUI spirit site includes information gathered from various sources, especially from members of the campus history working group and professor emeritus Ralph Gray's book IUPUI - The Making of an Urban University. We consider the site a work in progress, as we encourage the campus community to make submissions, updates, and corrections, as new elements of campus pride, spirit, and tradition are created and lived out every day.
The IUPUI Spirit Site is a great resource for faculty, staff, students, and the general community to learn about more than a century of history and folklore that is part of IUPUI's identity. These elements have contributed and shaped who we are, what we do, and how we connect to the Indianapolis community.
The mission of our site is to enlighten people about campus spirit in all its forms, encourage that spirit to grow and build the future of the campus, and encourage a greater sense of campus pride for our constituents.
