Staff Photographer
Following an 18-year-career as a Photographer and Photo Editor at the Indianapolis News and Star I began photographing on and around the IUPUI Campus. I love the pursuit of shooting art on assignment in the campus environment and culture. I also love getting away from it all and shooting just for the love and challenge of photography.
The main influences in my work are: Ansel Adams, for his attention to exposure as a tool of composition; Georgia O’Keefe, for her constant search for those sensual aspects in nature; and Henri Cartier-Bresson, for his ability not only to anticipate an action or event, but to capture the decisive moment. Of course there have been other influences, but my main synthesis has come from these three. Hopefully, you can see the influences of each as you view this collection.
I love photographing in New York, and the American West, Arizona in particular. I also challenge myself to find images at home in Indiana that aren’t directly connected to a working situation.
My approach to photography is not to wait for the so-called golden hour or perfect condition to capture an image, I seek instead to solve the problem of the moment in order to answer the question of what is drawing me to this or that particular subject, and how can I best visually translate that for others.
