IUPUI Webmaster
Sent in a comment about the web pages of IUPUI during the last 5 years? I read it (then answered it or forwarded it along to someone who could)...
Advertised an event in JagNews? I processed that (even sometimes at the last possible moment)...
Found something that needs to be altered right now? Send it my way.
When not performing feats of user support and customer service, I manage the day-to-day updating and maintenance of IUPUI's root web presence. This includes generating new content and pages, altering existing content, troubleshooting web or technology errors, and mending links that go boom in the night.
My duties also include acting as a sounding board, lending a critical eye to new concepts for design and usability evaluations, managing the IUPUI Events Site, consulting on new projects, administration and organization of the IUPUI Image Gallery, managing the office and volunteer pages of Community Relations, attending meetings on a veritable cornucopia of web and tech-related subjects, and answering questions via phone or e-mail on just about any topic (but primarily about the web and computers).
I've been employed by IUPUI in the Office of Communications & Marketing since 2001. Before earning the awe-inspiring title of Webmaster, I've also been know here as the Assistant to the Webmaster and Webmaster for Student Life & Diversity, a Web Developer and lastly as a Web Specialist (all those titles in just 5 short years while working from 4 different offices and within one small "temporary" building).
Before coming to the university I had already spent 7 years working in education with Beech Grove City Schools. There I worked as the network assistant and webmaster for both the high school and administration buildings. During my time with BGCS, I also taught basic web design to students and held adult classes at night for basic computing. In the 2 years before the BGCS gig I was employed as a Media Specialist (which involved performing video, web and networking monkey-work) for the MSD of Pike Township schools. For those of you paying attention so far, I liked high school so much the first 4 years that I went back again later for more than 11 more years.
Favorite Job Duties/Responsibilities
IUPUI Image Gallery, providing fresh images for the campus to use in marketing projects and answering the comments and questions from the campus, community, and prospective students.
When I'm not at work I'm...
Traveling, either through time or to different realities. Right, so that sounds a bit weirder than even I want it to sound. In what spare time I have from work and my lovely wife, I spend a great deal of time working on a side business with the purpose of creating original Role-Playing Games, t-shirts, and various other artistic works. When I really want to relax, and get a serious work-out at the same time, I schedule time away to visit the 1840's through period reenactment camping called simply "Rendezvous."
Favorite Movie
Before the mess that Lucas made of the prequels I might've said "Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back" and that would've been the end of it. While I still have a great fondness for my memories of the original trilogy I've moved those movies down the list. So favorite movies (yeah, I added an "s")...
- "Matrix" - the first one, ignore everything else. Alternatively, just catch "Dark City" and add a little "Bladerunner"...
- "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" ("Snatch" is the Hollywood conversion of this dark, British, perfect film and should be watched only after seeing the brilliance of the original)
- "Black Cauldron" and "Atlantis" tie for first in the cartoon category (excluding "Heavy Metal" simply because this seems like more of a family-oriented page...)
You get the idea. I don't really watch movies (or TV for that matter), I consume them; the good ones add into who I am and the bad ones just... uh... pass right through.
Favorite Drink
Arrogant Bastard. No, seriously, that's the name of it. Others include the Irish Car Bomb, good quality single malt scotch from the Highlands and others I won't mention to prevent people from assuming I've got a problem...
Favorite Color
PANTONE 1814 U 2X or PANTONE 021 U and some days PANTONE 361 C
Favorite TV Shows
Anything smart, funny, entertaining and weird - all the qualities TV should aspire towards. Currently this includes "BSG" (on Sci-Fi), "Heroes," "Studio 60" (both on NBC), and my sad indulgences also include "Grey's Anatomy" and "Inked." The all-time favorites list includes "DS:9", "The Sopranos," "Cheers," (early) "West Wing," (early) "ER", "Buffy/Angel/Firefly" (same spirit, different scripts/leads), "Hill Street Blues" and "Night Court" (come on, it was hilarious). This list could go on a good while longer as I've spent a good many years with the tube and several years reviewing TV for INtake magazine and my own web-based review pages.
